Trace DR2412 Output

Author: ve1sol

This is a view of the output waveform of a Trace DR2412  Modified Sinewave Invertor.  Basically,  as you can see…It is a Square Wave !

Lots of noise generated by this type of Invertor and some items just will not operate with this power while others appear to be operating normally,  they are overheating internally and could possibly create a hazard because of that.  Then there are others items which do not care what type of power they have and work normally.

But,  why Modify a Sinewave at all ?

HW 16 Project

First action was to do a quick cleanup of the Heathkit HW 16 and see just what was there and what may not be there !   Had it totally open and actually the overall condition is not to bad considering everything.  I do need to get some new parts for it so before going to far I researched the parts and found a supply for most of what I require.  The same supplier also has some old rigs used for parts as well.   The VFO with it is a Heathkit HG-10B and covers 2-6-10-15-20-40-80 Meter Bands.  The VFO cleaned up easily and also looked pretty good internally,  still need to check the output and stability etc… but that will be done later.  I found an assembly manual on the internet for the VFO c/w schematics etc.   Now the HW 16 I did find schematics for it but as yet have not found a manual but still looking.  It is only a three band rig and not a lot of power but it looks interesting anyway.

Jan 2010,  Opened the rig and took a look,  see pictures at bottom,  does not look to bad actually,  after a quick cleaning.  Some items missing off the PC board but nothing serious.  Will check the schematic to see what is actually missing.  Then a more in depth cleanup with the PC board out so all the ground connections can be cleaned up.   I was able to find a capacitor replacement kit from Tom, NOJMY, Hayseed Hamfest Co. all the electrolytic capacitors are included in one kit which makes it easier.

Jan 25-2010,  Replace one of the old capacitors with two new capacitors,  also replaced the resistor as the original one was showing signs of failure.    See the PC board picture,  replaced the original capacitor with the new blue capacitor.

Jan 31-2010:  Finally finished installing the new capacitors.  Not much room when using parts of this size !!!  But managed to everything in and reconnected.  Wiring…. thats another nightmare,  not everything was according to the schematics which made a lot of extra work tracing each connection from the new capacitors to make sure they were connected as per diagram.  At the moment…they seem to be as shown on the diagram,  will apply power later and check voltages …..right now I am going for dinner !
